Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Stephen Rogers Peck is an anatomy reference book.It covers everything from bones, to muscles to topics like fat, veins, hair, age, sex, race and expression. There are some photos for reference as well. The writeup is descriptive and simple to understand. The examples are well illustrated and clearly labeled. It's pretty comprehensive. While it also has some figure drawing tips and instructions, it certainly is not as comprehensive as dedicated figure drawing books. Here, it's on the approach to drawing certain parts. There's not much on posing the figure.I see this book get mentioned a lot on art forums online, for good reasons. It's useful and very affordable. This book's recommended to beginner and intermediate artists.(More pictures are available on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
This book is DENSE with information and I with every explanation on anatomy. It's a good read when you're bored and the art is gorgeous. It's a great first step for new artists that are interested in how anatomy works and what perspectives to use.
Recently for my "midlife" crisis I began to draw again. I never had any formal training but I can make my figures look realistic with the exception of some anatomical details. Peck's bool gives me the in depth views that I lack from a non formal training. While his text is rather detailed and scientific, his illustrations are natural and use many every day examples (like a spool to illustrate the phalanges) to model moving parts of the body. In the three days that I have owned the book my drawings have become more life like than ever. I am still hoping to improve. I would definately recommend this book for any artist, aspiritng or not.
I was required to buy this for class. It has a fantastic balance between detailed diagrams from various sides and angles, and collections of quick little sketches to show body parts in motion. There is a lot of text to read as well, and all those complicated names, locations, and functions are organized in neat, easy-to-navigate charts. I keep this book open on the side when I do live figure drawings, it's a great reference.
The focus of this book is on body parts, not action poses. Step by step it takes you from the skeleton and individual bone structure to muscles and skin. Lots of sketches show you how to begin blocking in portions of the body. For an artist who wants to portray realistic looking humans in their drawings or paintings, this is a wonderfully helpful tutorial.
Top quality artist reference and easy to use the way it is divided into chapters. I broke the binding and now have loose pages. Could it have a better way to prepare for hard use?
Not too dense, easy to carry in your bag. Just a wealth of good stuff I am always using to practice and expand my anatomy knowledge. It's really good about breaking down the construction of anatomy (similar to Constructive Anatomy which is also great) and uses great examples to help you understand anatomical structure. It also has plenty of detailed visuals when you want to get a very in depth understanding of bone/muscle groups. Of the half a dozen anatomy books I own, this one would be the best to sum up the subject.
This is a great book for artist drawing and sculpting, this was recommended to me buy a great sculptor friend of mine.
I'm no pro, I was referred this book for an introductory figure sculpting class. It's beautiful and incredibly deep. I also wasn't expecting so many pages for the price. A must for anyone interested with the human figure in regards to art.
