The tutorials and illustrations are of highest quality you will ever find in a How-To-Draw manga. The bulk of this book is in chapters 1 and 2, expressing emotions with the face and body, with a few tips and samples in chapter 3 on setting up scenes.There is a lot of good stuff in this book. For example, in Chapter 1, a nice table which maps degree of emotion (Joy, Anger, Anguish, Fear) to the symbolic shape of eyebrows and mouth. You also get a variety of samples showing six emotions (Expressionless, Cheerful or Joy, Anger, Anguish, Unease or Terror, and Smile or Smug) on different types of characters, male and female (Game Character, Comic Child Character, OVA Character, Giant Robot Pilot, Aesthetic Character, Detective Story Character, and Student Character). And in chapter 2, you get to revisit these characters on full body.Chapter 4 is the only chapter that feels a bit out of place. This brief chapter provides tips on how to fix some commonly made mistakes while drawing characters. I consider these as bonus tips. I don't actually draw in an anime style, more of an american style, I really love this book.What makes it different from other books I have tried about expressions is that it explains the details they changed and how they changed them, such as "eyebrows are slightly more arched than neutral". This makes it so much easier to us on a wide range of characters, vs. Just the character they have pictured. Also the expressions it teaches you are more diverse than other books. My favorite part about this book is that it also talks about the importance of head tilt in expression, which many books fail to mention. It's already made my characters more concincing!

Like the series this book is good to beginners. It gives you a of examples in an exhausting way, great to use as reference in a specific moment.This is not my favorite book, but the entire series make a great collection and they're always handy.

Tons of information! It doesn't just show faces it shows you how to draw whole bodies with more emotion and angles to increase the mood. It goes deep into detail with simple things that make all the difference in the end. I think it is much more useful than vol. 1

About the Author

Don Poulton (A+, Network+, Security+, MCSA, MCSE) is an independent consultant who has been involved with computers since the days of 80-column punch cards. After a career of more than 20 years in environmental science, Don switched careers and trained as a Windows NT 4.0 MCSE. He has been involved in consulting with a couple of small training providers as a technical writer, during which time he wrote training and exam prep materials for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Don has written or contributed to several titles, including Security+ Lab Manual (Que, 2004); MCSA/MCSE 70-299 Exam Cram 2: Implementing and Administering Security in a Windows 2003 Network (Exam Cram 2) (Que, 2004); MCSE 70-294 Exam Prep: Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure (Que, 2006); and MCTS 70-620 Exam Prep: Microsoft Windows Vista, Configuring (Que, 2008).
